Is there a road back to normal?

The world still reels for over a year now from the corona virus pandemic. To this day, over two million people have passed away and more than seventeen thousand people are dying every day from all over our planet. We are seeing the evolution of the corona virus into more virulent strains. If we are not committed to world-wide elimination, then more and more strains will evolve. Variants of Covid are now showing up in England, Europe, Africa and America. We may never be free of it.

The world’s richest nations have started to vaccinate their citizens. Sadly, many poor nations may see little or none of this world panacea. If underprivileged countries cannot vaccinate their citizens, then the world will never be free of corona. Vaccine nationalism is a new term I learned recently. Meaning — that countries with money are able to buy up most of the world’s supply of vaccine.

The world will never be back to normal unless the entire world’s people are vaccinated. It is imperative and incumbent on the western world to ensure everyone is vaccinated. It is a very sad commentary on the richest countries and indeed the richest people on our mother Earth. Future history will mark the failure to treat all people the same as cruel, senseless and greedy.

In a world where we see many wealthy people hoard away immense wealth, we also see two thirds of the world’s people living in poverty. There is more than enough money that can be donated by the thousands of billionaires into a fund, managed by a responsible organisation like W.H.O. or the United Nations, to ensure the total elimination of the corona virus.

At a recent NORAD Conference 2021, panel, the W.H.O. Director General talked about vaccine nationalism and global distribution –

“Vaccine nationalism is self-defeating and inefficient, leaving the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people at risk. The emergence of rapidly-spreading variants makes the urgent and equitable rollout of vaccines all the more important.”

I recommend that all the billionaires on our world place a lot of cash into a fund to save the world from corona. This fund would ensure that every person (all 7.5 billion of us) would get a lifesaving jab in the arm. What would it take to urge billionaires to donate maybe 1% of their wealth to eliminate this terrible virus once and for all? Would that be asking too much? I think not. Let’s face it; we are on this planet together. We all have to learn to share and we must resolve world-wide problems like this pandemic for our very survival. How does one approach all the billionaires anyway?

Today, the demand for the vaccine is outstripping the supply. The vaccine is being made by a few companies that are working overtime to complete an ever increasing demand from more and more countries. Seven and a half billion little glass vials is a lot of work let alone the logistics involved in delivering to all people from all countries, from the seas to the mountains. This process alone could take two years or more.

The economic implications from the corona pandemic have been devastating to billions of people. Millions of people had their work put on hold or had to change their life styles to work at home. I personally think that if you can work from home then do so. I have heard predictions that the economic recovery from the pandemic will take up to 10 years before any normality can be attained.

It seems to me that we cannot go on as we have for the last few decades the way we have been. Rampant consumerism, the obsession with money and the polluting of our land and seas continuing unabated are destroying our world and eroding our humanity. Levels of pollution were reduced during the pandemic. The corona pandemic has reminded us how fragile we are and as humans, has connected us back to our humanity.
